Grid Congestion: What it means and how to handle it

Grid congestion means that the electricity network is, in many cases, temporarily overloaded. This can result in new connections not being realized immediately or in temporary restrictions on feeding energy back into the grid (source: Netbeheer Nederland).

The cause?
The grid was originally designed for stable and predictable loads, but the energy transition is causing far more peaks and energy feedback than before.

When does grid congestion occur?

Grid congestion mainly occurs during peak periods:

  • 06:00 – 10:00: many businesses and households simultaneously draw power (starting up for the day).
  • 12:00 – 16:00: there is significant energy feedback from solar power, while demand is low.
  • 16:00 – 20:00: another peak due to households, offices, and charging of electric vehicles.

Impact on companies and installers

Grid congestion can result in:

  • Project delays: new connections can take weeks to months.
  • Limited energy feedback: businesses with solar panels or charging plazas cannot feed their generated power back into the grid.
  • Additional costs: for example, generators or alternative energy supplies.

For installers and technology partners, this presents a significant opportunity: they can advise and support their customers with temporary solutions.

How can you address grid congestion?

  1. Mobile battery systems
With a mobile battery container, you can store energy and deliver it at times when the grid is overloaded.
  2. Smart software solutions
By intelligently managing charging and feedback moments, you can spread grid load more effectively.
  3. Temporary grid upgrades
For larger projects, temporary grid reinforcement can be a solution—provided sufficient capacity is available.
